Four Things You Shouldn’t Do in a Hot Tub

Updated: Nov 11, 2023

This year, the demand for hot tubs has skyrocketed! With many companies citing an 1000% increase in sales back in June, most retailers were completely selling out online and waiting lists have now stretched right into mid next year.

But if you were one of the lucky ones who managed to get your hands on a luxury hot tub, we’re sure you’re reaping the benefits. From soothing sore muscles and relaxing with friends, there are plenty of ways you can enjoy your hot tub. However, it’s important to use it safely and avoid anything that could potentially cause damage to you or your spa.

As providers of the best hot tub accessories on the market, Aqua Spa Supplies outlines the four things you should avoid when taking a dip.

Don’t get in before testing the water

Whether you have a lazy-spa or a Swim Spa, all hot tubs need to use the best spa chemicals to make sure the water stays clean and prevent damage to your tub. However, many spa owners fail to test their water regularly enough; leading to itchy skin, scale build up and cloudy water.

We recommend to test the water after every one to three uses, ensuring it’s within the following levels: A chlorine or bromine level of three to five parts per million (ppm) must be maintained The total alkalinity should be 80-120ppm, with a pH between 7.2 and 7.8 The calcium level should be around 100-250ppm.

For the best hot tub accessories that test and maintain your water quality, we recommend the Yourspa Watercare Kit to keep your spa in check.

Don’t wear oily lotions

The secret to a good pamper session is a skincare routine. But did you know the oils and lotions from skincare can not only affect your pH levels, but make your filters work twice as hard?

Showering before getting in will get rid of oily products, sweat and skin cells and help to avoid any problems. We also recommend showering after your soak to wash away any chemicals that could lead to skin irritation.

Don’t submerge open wounds

While the chemicals in your spa are great for keeping it clean, not all bacteria can be eliminated. Make sure to avoid the spa if you have an open wound to prevent the risk of infection. If you get a wound wet by accident, make sure you disinfect it swiftly.

Don’t use bubble bath

It might feel like a big bath, but don’t use it like one! Bubble bath will cause excessive foam and serious damage to the tub’s structure. If you want to add a little more luxury, then you can buy hot tub-specific spa bombs and crystals. We recommend our luxury Yourspa fragrance range.
